ABSTRACT

Art Xcess Library (AXL) at School is an innovative project to develop literacy in schools. AXL was inspired by the Little Tiny Free Library (LTFL) which originated from Wisconsin, USA. The study began when it was found that the low frequency of visits by pupils to the school library was due to logistical reasons. An innovation was carried out in order to make the library accessible in an easier and relaxed manner. The initial data taken from observation of pupils' literacy levels and their NILAM reading records were unsatisfactory. To raise literacy levels and encourage reading culture, multiple units of AXL with various designs and themes were placed around the school to attract pupils. Reading campaigns were also launched. Data recorded after the implementation of AXL showed an improvement in pupils' literacy and their NILAM reading records. All in all, it was proven than AXL has helped in developing literacy and automatically established a reading culture among pupils.
